Further fun with Fondant
So these are lotus flowers made with Jasmine flavored fondant.
I basically took the usual marshmallow fondant recipe, and substituted half of the "water" in the microwaving stage for extract.
It was pretty wow!
And then with the extra fondant I made "truffles". Just dipped round balls of fondant into melted chocolate. Also delicious!
Asian-style Pulled Pork
This recipe is normally an on the stove for hours recipe but I decided since I now own a slow cooker (and have for like 6 months) I would actually try using it. I think that the 'modified crock pot recipe' still needs some work but I'm going to go ahead and post the recipe anyways.
Sauteed Zucchini with Carrots
Currently my favorite way to eat zucchini. The way I like it best, it takes about 15 minutes to cook, but it can take as little as 5 minutes in the pan. I like a 50/50 mix of the veggies, but you could do whatever you wanted (although if what you wanted was just carrots, I'd do something else).
Pear and Blue Cheese Pasta
Pears, pecans, mushrooms and blue cheese make a sauce for whole wheat pasta. This dish tastes like fall to me. It's sweet-savory, filling, and even vegetarian, which I make up for with lots of dairy.
Post Ramen Lunch
After the extravaganza of the ramen making the day before (see related link for more info on that all day adventure), there was very little enthusiasm for making anything from scratch, and also a great deal of leftovers clogging up the fridge (but in a good way).
This is one of the things that I did with the extra meat & egg.
Certainly doesn't compare to some of the extravagant things seen on the internet but I think the delicious pork and the delicious soaked egg totally make up for it.
Orange Cake with Grand Marnier Ganache
Orange sour cream cake and orange liqueur-spiked dark chocolate ganache taste pretty good together. The cake recipe is from Gourmet magazine, and I added the ganache and filling. The original recipe would make a nice, simple cake. Prep time may be an underestimate depending on how quickly your cake cools.
Congratulations, HiSCI
My boss, Alfred, is the PI of another instrument which was just selected for inclusion on the joint NASA/ESA mission ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. Naturally, this calls for cake!
Moogle Cupcakes!
Went to the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concert in Washington DC this past friday. It was an outdoor venue with picnic/eating allowed on the lawn so of course I had to make something!
The picture isn't great but it's a moogle cupcake.
Not really complicated enough to warrant a recipe but the ingredients are:
cupcake+frosting
starburst (cut in half, pink)
jumbo gum drop (red)
marshmallow (pink)
Black icing for eyes.
Chocolate sprinkles for whiskers.
How to make a gluten-free, sugar-free crepe cake
Like to bake? Have a friend who can't eat gluten, and can only consume limited amounts of sugar? Feel guilty that you're always bringing in wheaty, sugar-laden baked goodness? Never fear - follow this easy tutorial, and you too can make a decadent treat for the sugar-free celiac in your life!
Mascarpone Hazelnut Cream
I made this as a substitution for pastry cream for a friend who can't eat sugar or wheat. It's pretty tasty and could be used anywhere you need a cold, creamy filling (I wouldn't recommend using it in any applications where what's being filled or topped is hot)
